Yesterday was guides day off and my buddy Jake and I went to the Rapid. Middle Dam was running 1300 cfs. I had not been in there for nearly a week due to the recent high flows and this was Jakes first time in there for the 2011 season. Being the fish predator that he is I figured he would be my guinea pig to scout the current conditions. I rowed/positioned the boat and was net man for the first few hours of the morning. Once Jake started getting into some nice trout I coaxed him to row a little and wield the net. Between the two of us we landed a bunch of feisty salmon and half a dozen or so nice trout. It was definitely Jake's day though because he landed a hog of a trout. It was probably the nicest trout I have had in the net for the 2011 season. There were a fair amount of other anglers around and most were catching fish. All of them were very courteous and showed good streamside etiquette. This can be a problem on the Rapid sometimes when it gets busy but not today. All in all it was another great day on the water.

Well, It has been a tough week! I rescheduled almost all of my guided trips this week due to the high flows. There are know doubt fish to be caught but limited spots to safely catch them. When I am guiding especially more then one person I find myself always looking over my shoulder to make sure the other person is ok. I would have been a nervous wreck this week. I guided one of my regular clients Monday who was well aware of the conditions but just wanted to get out and wet a line. We bounced from one river/stream to the next and caught fish but did more driving then fishing. I think the weather is going to change for the better this weekend and flows will continue to go down and things should be prime for Memorial Day Weekend. Lets Hope!

I went into the Rapid River today with my friend Tom. We couldn't have asked for a better day fishing or weather. We managed to pick up 18 fish between the to of us, 15 trout and 3 salmon. The trout ranged from 15"-19" and the salmon were 12", 17" and 22". Nymping was the ticket! The flow was 400 cfs. The fish seem to be moving up throughout the river. Our other area rivers are still in runoff stage and difficult to fish. Lets hope we don't get any substantial rain on top of this. I heard the peepers the other night and have seen trucks go by with smelt nets in the back so the smelt ,if not already, will be runing soon.

Jake and I fished the Rapid yesterday from about 8am to 1:30pm. The fishing was good! We caught fish on everything, dries, wets, streamers and nymphs. We had some pretty good dry fly fishing around 11:00 with sulphers duns coming off the water and the fish were interested but, it was short lived. The wind picked up and the rises ceased. There were plenty of other anglers around as expected for the start of the big weekend but all were very courtious and looked to be having success as well. It was a great day!
